Karen Sorensen, aka Maya, creates visionary art as a transformational pathway …transcending into the subtle energy realms of nature…..awakening mystical imagination and expanding human perception of the living Gaia. An illusive animating essence of human consciousness dancing in surreal cohesive unison makes the living soul of Earth’s flowers, forests and fires perceptible. Something physical…perhaps elemental… comes alive. The two seem to be indistinguishable as a synchronistic unity is revealed, a pattern of existence, inspiring the spirit into a morphogenic field of unity consciousness …unlimited and ever expanding …creating not just a work of art, but a continuous exploration of the nature of reality through the eyes of the observer.…a magical illusory show … maya.
“Through contemplation of the artwork I like to inspire the viewer to shift visual dimensions and observe parallel realities animating in unison … woven and interconnected in a field of nature. My goal is to make these multi-dimensional fields perceivable…to soften the exclusive limitation of defined form, or collective agreement, and open the door to expansive perceptual possibilities we all innately share. “
Science, spirituality, and healing have entered into an understanding that there is a unified field, a synchronistic oneness, unlimited and ever expanding. Though living forms, or collective light/wave particles, express themselves individually and feel a unique separateness, there is an unifying connection to a whole existence, ‘mana’ or energy, which animates life.
“In an Advanced Mindscape workshop I shifted my ‘awareness’ to the top of a giant white oak. From this vantage point I observed a grid, an overlaying cohesive pattern that each leaf had created as it had fallen…..as if a magnetic field or matrix holding this grid had attracted each leaf into its exact place on the ground. I have further observed that by focusing center field in nature and expanding peripheral perception, there seems to be a grid based on a continuous interlocking triangle…three large trees as grid/matrix holders. As I open perception further a pattern very similar to ‘Magic Eye Art‘….appears… a unified woven pattern holding this grid/matrix in place. Is ‘reality’ perceived/created through our direct attention into this grid/matrix?”
In observing composition of a painting I have contemplated that when a composition is complete….even to the minute shifting of one line….the cohesion and ‘truth’ of the composition must have attached to this grid…….this matrix…this sacred geometry. As an impressionist I seek form through expressions of color and light. At first these strokes shape the identified form of nature we solidify as reality, or illusion, or Maya. “In Hindu philosophy the goddess Maya is like a veil, being the world that we perceive, while at the same time hiding the deeper reality that is the truth (Brahman)." Maya distracts us from essence. I search within nature for essence…the deva/elemental dance of essential cohesive manifestation…the push/pull…the tango…the pulse…of sacred duality…upon whose marriage opens the gateway to One Mind Infinite Divine Creative Force.
It takes me a while to understand these paintings…they teach me and show me the way. One form gives way to the next and the sacred geometry of the compositional patterns of nature identify themselves and emerge. When the surrounding forms reveal themselves, deva in origin, they seem to relate to the field of imagery, elemental in origin, in perfect synchronicity….one defines and balances another. As meditation opens my perception further an all encompassing image seems to overlay the entire field of imagery. Some paintings show infinite fields of potential perceived dimensional realities co-existing in the same place at the same time, available through shifting focused awareness. I believe this ties very closely into the current concepts, or sacred understanding, of how we create our reality depends on where we design our perceptual attention.
Transcendental paintings of illusive surreal nature scenes from the Gallery of Maya create a journey through the impressionist landscape … a playground for the imagination to ‘see’ and ‘discover’ , to ‘expand’ beyond the limitation of defined perception and ‘shift’ … into a garden of flowers … and essential life … sharing Oneness of Creation in a Field of Existence … Humanity in the Garden … an Intimate Dance of the Consciousness of the Living Gaia.
Mahalo nui loa……..Maya
Karen Sorensen aka ‘Maya’ was born in Little Rock, AR to Danish impressionist painter and internationally known cartoonist John Sorensen and Betty Hunter Sorensen, also an impressionist painter. She learned at an early age, technique from her mother and impressionist ‘spirit’ from her father. Her natural ability was apparent by age 7 when the judges of a young art exhibit disbelieved she could have actually painted her little oil still life!
After completing a BA in Psychology and Art from San Francisco State and the University of Arkansas, further independent study at the Arkansas Art Center with Marcel Witkowski deepened and awakened her fluid impressionism. “Marcel had known and respected my then deceased father, so seemed to intuitively understand how to work with me. I credit him significantly with the release of my artistic flair.”
After a vibrantly inspirational journey throughout the impressionist museums of Europe, Maya began her professional career at age 23 as a portrait artist in an Ozark Mountain amusement park. It was at this time, while painting in the Ozarks, she began to explore and ‘see’ an illusive animating human consciousness within the impressionist landscape. The ‘veil’ was revealing itself. It would take years before this visionary art would find completion…but “life as a magical illusory show’ …defined in Sanskrit as Maya…had awakened.
Sensation of the Mystical
The most beautiful and profound emotion we can experience
is the sensation of the mystical. It is the sower of all true science.
To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists,
manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty,
this knowledge, this feeling, is at the center of true religion
~ Albert Einstein ~
When artists work with the subtle realms of angels our consciousness is linked to a higher reality and elevated by depicting the mystic imagination and opening channels to the Divine. An artist fulfilling the sacred legacy of their profession, dedicates their work to the liberation of all beings. Their art is uniquely suited to be a tap root to the collective psyche and zeitgeist of the moment, to potentiating an historic evolution of consciousness.

By accepting the interdependency of all life and our universal interconnectedness we have a chance to heal and transform the planet. In using art as a tool for transformation, we have the opportunity to create a reality as beautiful, healthy and strong as our imagination permits.

Many who have experienced infinite Oneness claim to have seen themselves as a part of a light web of souls. Co-recognizing our interrelatedness is at the heart of visionary culture and is a harbinger of universal spirituality and the dawning of planetary civilization.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
